Regardless of the balance, continuing some responsive giving allows place-based funders to maintain flexibility and continue to address important needs within their community or region. Doing so also provides a pressure valve by allowing for continued support to vital organizations that, going forward, may fall outside of a funder’s proactive focus. Allowing for some responsive grantmaking enables funders to continue to learn about and support new organizations, innovative ideas, and emerging needs. Responsive Grants are designed to address urgent community needs, emerging opportunities, test new ideas, or support proven programs across the nonprofit sector. Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations focused on any subject-matter or area of need within reseponsive grants the community. The grant awards start at $10,000 with a typical grant term of one year, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Additionally, organizations that submit a joint application outlining the collaborative use of their common resources to achieve a greater level of efficiency will be given special consideration. This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofit organizations addressing urgent community needs or innovative projects, with awards starting at $10,000 for initiatives that demonstrate strong potential for positive impact. We help to enact “better” policy – both public policy and the policy of key institutions by changing political, economic, and social structures (and culture) in ways that expand who has access to resources, opportunities and power. Organizations are eligible for one Responsive Grant award per calendar year. The selection criteria emphasize organizational strength, potential for community impact, and a sound implementation plan, including a feasible project budget, capacity for execution, and a method for tracking progress and outcomes. Support is also available for non-501(c)(3) organizations utilizing a fiscal sponsor with the necessary IRS designation, subject to the review of the fiscal sponsor’s health and a signed sponsorship agreement. Through proactive approaches, funders can develop a roadmap for tackling ambitious philanthropic goals, and can capitalize on opportunities for leverage, learning, and leadership. We recognize that our shift to multi-year funding is challenging for organizations who are not recent grant recipients and would benefit from an opportunity to apply for funding through a competitive grant process. We continue to work with our staff, board, and non-profit partners to identify and invest in programs that support your work outside of the Responsive grants, including capacity-building for nonprofits, peer learning and strategic partnerships.

General Operating Support (GOS)

• The funding organisation is saddled with the responsibility of taking the first steps and ultimately ensuring the actualisation of the grantmaking.
• Grants in this area focus on projects that boost confidence in democracy.

• Eligible organizations may submit requests for support during a period of urgent need.
• In the Responsive Grants Program, organizations can apply for project, capacity building, equipment or technology, capital projects, or general operating support.

By thinking through important questions about balance, timeframe, process, strategy, and communications, funders can manage the transition in ways that are open, transparent, and forward-looking. Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio recognizes the many ways organizations are working to improve the quality of health in our community and understands such work must be supported financially to thrive. Responsive Grants provide funding of up to $300,000 for mid- to large-sized organizations. No, organizations may only submit one application in the Responsive Process and may not apply in Cycle 2 if they submitted an application in Cycle 1, even if they were not awarded a grant in Cycle 1. Additionally, program officers will schedule time to meet with non-profits on an annual basis to learn more about the work and impact of non-profits.

In May, the Henry Luce Foundation issued a call for ideas from potential partners around the world to help the Foundation shape a new initiative. The Foundation’s goal is to learn from the eventual grantees as it designs a multi-year grantmaking effort. As we shift toward more proactive approaches, how can we be helpful to nonprofits that we may no longer support?

Supports organizations and programs that enhance the quality of life for all animals, educate the community regarding responsible pet care, and enhance spay/neuter and adoption services. On the other hand, if funders only respond to unsolicited requests, three challenges can arise. First, funders often find their giving is “an inch deep and a mile wide.” Second, if a funder seeks to address a specific issue or need, a more responsive approach may not uncover efforts that could achieve the greatest impact. Finally, without clear goals and targeted strategies, it can be difficult to measure progress towards social impact goals.

Funding Considerations

At Luce, we recognize that democratic governments cannot survive if the people they govern do not thrive. Members of a democracy expect their governments to provide education, healthcare, safe environments, and economic opportunity. Grants in this area focus on projects that boost confidence in democracy. Responsive Grants are generally $10-15,000 and  can be requested throughout the year.

This is an opportunity for non-profits to share updates, successes and challenges, and to connect with resources at the Area Foundation. Programs that enhance the quality of life for all animals, educate the community regarding responsible pet care, and enhance spay/neuter and adoption services. Responsive grants are three-year, general operating support grants awarded to organizations whose services align with the vision of at least one of our four primary impact areas. Priority is given to organizations serving under-represented and under-served communities. A diverse cohort of 15 organizations was recently awarded grants by the Henry Luce Foundation—part of a new initiative to identify and support work in the areas of Democracy, Ethics and Public Trust.
